Lobster - please check Elkdog's post elsewhere in this thread for what I feel may be very sound reasoning as to why Lesh doesn't play Weir. I think it's a question of 'fit' rather than awkwardness.

I did read his post and while he has some nice thoughts I find it hard to believe that lesh hasn't thought to play Sugar magnolia with Phil and friends on NYE. Either as a kick ass opener at midnight or a tribute to good friend Bill Graham. I'm not a musician, but i really don't think that song is so complicated that it wouldn't fit in his setlist.

Sugar Mags is a quintessentially Bobby song (in my opinion) and maybe Phil just doesn't feel he can bring more to the party than Weir does. Certainly Phil is happy to perform what we'd probably consider pure Jerry songs, but sadly Jerry isn't here to do them and I'm glad Phil is keeping that flame alive. I think, pure speculation again, that Phil had more of an affinity with Garcia than with Weir - but lack of affinity isn't proof of animosity of course.

Catfight? Naahh... just a robust exchange of views and all the more enjoyable for it. Where's the fun in agreeing all the time? :-)
